Mass Effect Movie News

Some interesting news on the Mass Effect movie emerged yesterday. Legendary Pictures mentioned that a Mass Effect movie is indeed in the works, and it will feature a male Shepard. The interesting part is that it will be a different story than the games. They are putting every effort to making sure they are honoring the vast universe that was created for Mass Effect, and Bioware is working closely with Legendary Pictures on the project.

REVIEW: Contagion

Trust no one.

That’s the feeling you get when you watch Contagion. Soderbergh’s portrayal of society is both refreshing, and terrifying. The strength of the movie is in its realism.  If a virus broke out today that has the potential to wipe out millions of the population how would we react? Contagion looks at this, and does a really good job at giving varying viewpoints, while the CDC looks tries to find an answer. But does that make the film any good?

REVIEW: Warrior

If you’ve seen the trailer for Warrior then you already know that two brothers are in a winner take all cage match. What makes Warrior a very entertaining ride is the journey. Gavin O’Connor knows how to capture the emotion of a scene, and he builds three dimensional characters that the audience can relate to. By the time you get to the end you want both brothers to win.

REVIEW: Colombiana

Colombiana has the pedigree of great films, unfortunatley Luc Besson’s latest screenplay does little to capture the spirit of his previous work. La Femme Nikta and  Leon: The Professional were fresh, full of artistic style and imagination. Colombiana feels like a cheap ripoff of the genre he has created.

REVIEW: Conan the Barbarian

Conan the Barbarian is a remake of the iconic film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. In this vision Jason Momoa takes the title role, and shows the true barbarianism of the character. The strength of this film is the action, it’s fast and brutal approach makes for a more believable fight scene. Unfortunately, the bad outweighs the good. Poor script, bad dialogue, and miscasting cause this reboot to seem boring, and uninspired.

REVIEW: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

It is always hard to reboot classic film franchises. Tim Burton tried to resurrect the Apes franchise in 2001, but that was considered a colossal failure, thus a sequel to was never made. After 11 years Rupert Wyatt took the helm and rebooted the franchise. Rise of the Planet of the Apes no longer has people dressed as apes. Technology has caught up to the apes concept, and CGI apes become real. Caesar, the main character, played by Andy Serkis is a monumental achievement in making a believable CGI character. You care about Caesar, and you can see all his emotions, his facial expressions, and this helps your immersion. Caesar is real, he makes you care. That’s what makes this film works.

Spy Kids: All the Time in the World

Something smells, and unfortunately it isn’t the “aroma-scope” card I was handed as I walked into the theater. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D is weighed down by terrible gags, unfunny moments, and forgettable performances by most of the cast. The wit and charm of the series was left on the Island of Lost Dreams.

REVIEW: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

“You’re a different kind of wizard Harry.”

While many people, myself included were excited to finally see an epic battle by wizards, it’s actually the characters that give Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 the fitting ending the series deserved. We watched these characters grow, we care about them, and the little character moments are what separates this film series from a lot of today’s movies.
