Sony No Longer Paying For 3D Glasses

The Hollywood Reporter has said that Sony issued a letter to cinemas stating that it will no longer be flipping the bill for the 3D glasses for its movies. As of May 1st 2012 theaters will have to supply their own glasses for Sony movies. This would save Sony $5-$10 million per film. Many other studios have also begun to talk about doing something similar.

When I first read this I thought to myself, “FINALLY, no more 3D!” But then I realized that it won’t stop movie companies from making post converted 3D films, they just won’t be paying for the glasses anymore. So it seems like a big F U to the theater owners that spent a lot of money to get their screens 3D enabled to begin with. Does that mean the price for a 3D movie will rise to $6-$10 extra per ticket? It very well could…

Good job Sony. I really wanted to pay $20 bucks to see The Amazing Spider-Man, now I get my chance!
