REVIEW: Colombiana
Colombiana has the pedigree of great films, unfortunatley Luc Besson’s latest screenplay does little to capture the spirit of his previous work. La Femme Nikta and Leon: The Professional were fresh, full of artistic style and imagination. Colombiana feels like a cheap ripoff of the genre he has created.
Zoe Saldana plays an assassin named Cataleya that is out for revenge. She is named after the flower, and marks on all her victims in hopes to fulfill her ultimate goal, louring out her enemies. She is a sultry vixen, that has terrific screen presence, and she is very believable in her role. However, not even her charisma can save this film from being a uninspired. Aside from Saldana, none of the other charcters have any arc. FBI agents are there just to chase her, and even her victims are just nameless fodder. Her boyfriend, played by Michael Vartan knows nothing about her, yet he is infatuated with her. The film has zero emotion, and feels lazy. There is one fight towards the end that is suppose to invoke some sort of feeling, but fails to hit the action beats that merit any kind of feeling other than the feeling like you’ve seen this all before. There is no pay offs to any of the action scenes, and this film doesn’t have the narrative to rely on.
Colombiana just doesn’t do anything different, and Zoe’s talents are on display, but she is ultimately wasted.
